Manor Wildlife Park is launching a critical fundraising initiative for puffin conservation. As charismatic ambassadors of the North Atlantic, puffins have become a symbol of the sea's health and biodiversity.
Unfortunately, these striking birds are now threatened by a number of issues, and Manor Wildlife PArk IS pleased to be working in partnership with The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales and will be donating proceeds from this fundraiser to support their conservation work on Skomer & Skokholm Islands
Puffins are experiencing a serious decline, particularly in Europe. This worrying trend is primarily due to a combination of climate change, overfishing, and marine pollution. Changes in sea temperature and weather patterns disrupt the delicate balance of the marine ecosystems on which puffins depend, affecting the availability and location of their primary food source, small fish like sand eels. Overfishing exacerbates this problem by reducing the puffins' food supply even further. Additionally, marine pollution, particularly plastic pollution, poses a serious hazard to puffins who can mistake small pieces of plastic for food.
To address this pressing concern, Manor Wildlife Park is committed to raising funds specifically to support habitat conservation in Pembrokeshire. Pembrokeshire is home to a critical puffin breeding site, with the islands of Skomer and Skokholm recognized as Special Protection Areas due to their importance for these and other seabirds. These habitats provide crucial nesting grounds and plentiful food resources, making their protection vital for puffin survival. Funds raised through this initiative will go directly towards work carried out by The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales to help safe guard the future of these amazing animals.
The funds raised will be used to support initiatives aimed at preserving and improving these crucial puffin habitats; this includes monitoring and research to understand better the specific requirements of puffins, and how best to manage their habitats in the face of ongoing environmental changes. It also involves practical conservation work, such as the management of vegetation on the islands to ensure suitable nesting conditions, and measures to protect puffin colonies from invasive species and human disturbance.
Every donation to Manor Wildlife Park's puffin habitat conservation fund can make a real difference, helping to ensure that Pembrokeshire remains a stronghold for puffins in the UK. Join us in our mission to protect these remarkable birds and the unique landscapes they call home.
